program description of CLTP9

Syaril Azrad Md Ali

Class of CLTP9

Present Status: Lecturer and Researcher (PhD in Mechanical Engineering)
Present position: Senior Lecturer, Student Affairs and Activities Coordinator of School of Aerospace Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Present Research Interests: Space System, Unmanned Aerial Systems, High-altitude Balloon Systems, High-altitude Wind Energy

Statement of Purpose

I am a senior lecturer in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang, Malaysia and teach several courses related to the satellite systems to undergraduate students. I am also a researcher in the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Space Systems Lab. My current research is focus on development of sensors and systems for swarming of UAS which include satellites and quadrotors. I have also worked on developing high altitude balloon platforms which can be used for CanSat experiments. Besides that, I am also involved in outreach activities to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education to youngsters in Malaysia. Through CLTP, I would like to enrich my teaching contents and method by adding cubesat development module.

Feedback from CLTP

CLTP was effective in giving me a hands-on experience for basic understanding of cubesat development. This approach gave me a better understanding about the development cycle of a satellite. Throughout the training I was guided by the instructors and assistants effectively to understand how different satellite subsystems works. The participants were given the opportunity to execute a simple cubesat mission by applying Systems Engineering approach. During the course I was able connect with other researchers in different parts of the world for future potential educational and research collaborations.

Vision for the future

Through the success of our counterparts in Japan, it would be an inspiration and motivation for my students in realizing the development and launching of our own cubesats. Based on the CLTP experience, I would like to share the knowledge to the students so that they can realize the dream of developing and launching a cubesat into space a reality.

Message for future CLTP participants

I would like to recommend CLTP to all because we can effectively gain the knowledge to start a cubesat training programme in our respective institutions at home. The links created with other educators and researchers from other parts of the world would be certainly valuable for your future career undertakings.
